NRI Guide to Visiting Tirumala (Tirupati) for Darshan
This guide is intended for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) planning to visit Tirumala (Tirupati) during their vacation in India. It combines my personal experience with the official Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) guidelines.
Background
Until 2025, I typically booked a one-day Tirumala Darshan package through the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC).
Beginning in 2025, NRIs have the option of availing themselves of the NRI Darshan Quota, which allows eligible visitors to purchase the ₹300 Special Entry Darshan ticket on the same day.
The ticket counter generally operates between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. It is advisable to arrive by 11:30 AM so you can be among the first in line.
Documents Required
Please carry the following:
Original Passport
Your original foreign passport is mandatory.
The passport should contain an immigration stamp showing your arrival in India within the previous 30 days.
Pen
You will need to complete a registration form with details such as:
Name
Age
Gender
Passport Number
Foreign Address
Contact Number
Verified Registration Form
After completing the form, obtain the required signature from the designated TTD official or authorized personnel.
During ticket issuance, officials primarily verify this signed form in addition to your passport.
Purchasing the Darshan Ticket
Ticket Cost: ₹300 per person
Accepted payment methods:
Cash
Google Pay / UPI
Indian Debit Card
Indian Credit Card
Waiting Period
After obtaining your ticket, you will be directed to a designated waiting hall.
Based on my experience, expect to wait anywhere from 2 to 5 hours before being allowed to proceed for Darshan.
One practical observation:
If refreshments are being served in the waiting hall, it generally indicates that the waiting period may be longer than expected.
Darshan Experience
Once released from the waiting hall:
It typically takes about one hour to reach the sanctum.
The actual Darshan of Lord Venkateswara is brief.
On less crowded days, you may receive around 10 seconds of Darshan.
During peak periods, Darshan may last only 3 to 5 seconds.
Regardless of the duration, the spiritual experience is deeply fulfilling and memorable.
Official NRI Darshan Guidelines (TTD)
According to the official Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) guidelines:
NRI Darshan is a walk-in facility; advance online booking is not available.
Eligible visitors include:
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders
The passport must show entry into India within the last 30 days.
Immediate family members (spouse and children) may also be eligible, provided they satisfy the passport requirements.
Children below 12 years are generally permitted free of charge.
Reporting Location
Supatham Entrance, near the Vaikuntam Queue Complex-1 entrance, Tirumala.
Reporting Time
Daily between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
Document Verification
Carry:
Original Passport
Valid Visa (if applicable)
OCI Card (if applicable)
TTD officials will verify your immigration entry stamp before issuing the Darshan ticket.
Electronic Items
Before entering the queue, all mobile phones, cameras, smart watches, and other electronic devices must be deposited in the free locker facility provided by TTD.
Helpful Tips
Reach the reporting location before 12:00 PM to minimize waiting time.
Carry a pen to avoid unnecessary delays while completing forms.
Keep your passport readily accessible throughout the process.
Carry water and light snacks, especially if travelling with elderly family members or children.
Wear traditional attire or clothing that complies with the TTD dress code.
Since waiting times can vary depending on crowd levels, allow sufficient flexibility in your travel schedule.
May Lord Sri Venkateswara bless you and your family with a peaceful and spiritually enriching Darshan.
You could also add a short "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)" section (e.g., "Can OCI holders use this facility?", "Can parents accompany me?", "Is the 30-day rule strictly enforced?", "Where can I park?") to make the guide even more useful for first-time NRI visitors.
